The Death of OPSEC Airsoft Radio

It’s official, we’ve killed OPSEC with a shot to the head. More details, photos, history can be found here but below is the short version:

Farewell

So we’re officially done. For good this time. Website stripped, forums trashed, studio hardware sold, subscriptions canceled… 100% done with no chance of a coming back. This decision was not far off but general disinterest by the staff, family obligations and a desire to get away from the desk and back on the field spurred the idea to action. Thank you for the years of loyal listening, support and participation.

Long Range Claymore Remote

FRS Remote Claymore

Normally when I have an idea or want to convert something for an airsoft application, I go to mad-scientist Shoe who has the engineering background to bring said idea to life. In this case, I wanted to extend the range of my remote claymore and the 40+ feet that the modified garage door opener just wouldn’t cut it. I wanted more of a scenario piece where if the OPFOR didn’t get what they want or certain terms were broken, we could ‘detonate’ a prop remotely from any distance. So on a sunny SoCal Saturday, we met at his place and went to work.

This is a custom remote solution for setting off a Super Cell Dev airsoft claymore (ASC7) via FRS Radio. Our input box allows any source to be used… timers, garage door openers, etc but so far, we have only tested the FRS Radio. We used an old Motorola radio we had lying around and about $15 worth of parts from a local electronic store. This setup is intended to be used for airsoft scenario play in a powder application as remotely detonating a bb-throwing device from 2+ miles away is not only irresponsible, but a dangerous possibility of blind fire.

RPG-7

The RPG-7 came from the creative mind of Shoe, a fellow KDO teammate. He first designed an AT4 out of parts picked up from any hardware store. While it worked well, Lion Claws 6 was right around the corner and the team was going to be running as insurgents, hence the need for a more ‘authentic’ launcher. The technology used to launch the Zocker Darts has been around for ages (fueled by 40mm Moscart grenades), we just made it pretty. We initially thought about selling them, but didn’t want the liability associated with the level of stupidity we were seeing rise in our airsoft community, putting the proverbial nail in that coffin.

Function. The RPG is made mostly of items found in the hardware store and a few custom made parts. Keeping quasi-true to the real-steel RPG, our RPG uses “rounds”, each firing a single shot before having to be “discarded”. This round breech loads into the RPG itself and contains both the Zocker Dart and the Moscart propellant. We operate the RPG in 2-man rocket teams consisting of a shooter and assistant. The Shooter carrying the RPG loaded and the assistant carrying a vintage East German RPG-7 Gunners Ruck, which essentially carries the round, propane and a few extras.
